Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong

9/26/2006

Today was another fairly uneventful travel day. I had a nice ham and cheese sandwich for breakfast at this American style cafe that some of us have been frequenting regularly for the past couple days (good break from all of the rice). Then we left Chaing Mai in two vans with AC for about a 5 hour drive to Chiang Khong, a fairly small Thai town located on the border between Thailand and Laos. The guesthouse we stayed at was a beautiful place overlooking the Mekong River, which is the 12th longest river in the world and serves to demarcate Thailand and Laos as well as several other Asian countries. The guesthouse had a great view of Laos from across the river (see top picture). We arrived late in the afternoon, and I walked around the town with Richard for a bit. There really wasn't much to see. Nevertheless, at dinner we observed a very nice sunset while looking out at the Mekong (see bottom picture).
